Have you ever dreamed about jacking it all in and starting up a business of your own? If you’re a coach, the chances are you’ve already been through this process. If you’re an aspiring coach, this is something you still have to do. This is Osmaan Sharif’s speciality, and he’s probably the best person for the job seeing as nine years ago, he undertook that journey himself!
The fact of the matter is, stepping out on your own is scary. It takes immense bravery, unfathomable hope… and a lot of know how. Many start ups fail (in fact, most of them do) resulting in many hopefuls returning to their previous lives with their tail between their legs. We have something in common with Osmaan Sharif, and that’s the fact that we don’t want to see that to happen. Not to anyone.
The trick is to make smart, practical and congruent changes… and make them quickly. If the process takes too long, well, you probably already know what will happen.
Need a little inspiration ? I’ll leave that up to the expert in the matter of rapid transformation…
In a few weeks time there will be a full seminar from Osmaan on this exact topic, where you will be given full, working strategies on getting your own transformation off the ground. In the mean time, here’s a little bit of background info from the very man himself.
Where did all of it begin? Can you give me a brief overview of your journey?
I grew up thinking the only way to be successful was to go to university, get a graduate job and climb the corporate ladder, until you retire. So that’s what I started to do. I became a HR Manager and then Regional Training Manager for Marks & Spencer, before moving into the banking sector in a number of management positions within Lloyds TSB. But every time I got the job that I thought should make me really happy, I kept thinking .. ‘Is this it?’.
As part of my training in the bank, I went on a Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioner course & everything changed! I’ve always loved helping people & finally I found a ‘toolkit’ that helped me do that even better! So I decided to keep on going down that path and became a NLP trainer.
I remember being offered the ‘perfect’ job in Lloyds TSB & instead I quit my job, to start my own training and coaching business … nearly 9 years ago now!
My business, Rapid Transformation, started by focusing on training and NLP courses and over the last four years, has specialised more on working with individuals who want to start or grow their own business. I help them to really think, feel and act like an entrepreneur instead of an employee in their business!
Who has been the biggest influence on you?
There have been so many people that have influenced me throughout this journey, each in their own way. But when I came across Roger Hamilton and the Wealth Dynamics profiling system, this was a game changer for me. It showed me that there’s not just one way to be a successful business owner, and that it was key to focus on the ‘game’ that would work best for your personality and talents. This has become the core of everything that I do now in Rapid Transformation.
What makes you and your service different?
I keep things really simple in business. I help my clients get their design, mindsets and strategies really working for them! I’m also very grounded in my approach and really help my clients stop going round in circles and get focused. They’ve typically been to the seminars, done the courses, read the books… and are still stuck! That’s where I come in, to help them apply it all to them and their business!
What have your biggest challenges been?
At the start I was so broad in what I offered, I just wanted to help people create change using NLP no matter what areas of their life it was in. This was great on one hand as it helped me develop lots of skills and experience, but was a nightmare when marketing as ‘anyone’ was my ideal customer.
After spending my first few years specialising in being a NLP trainer & coach, I realised that there was so much more that I wanted to do. Of course NLP would underpin it all, but I wanted to do even more for my clients. I quickly figured out that out of everyone I had the pleasure of working with over the years so far, I especially loved helping those who were in a corporate or more ‘traditional’ job and wanted to get out there & start their own business instead. Transitioning my brand and focus was a challenge, as every time I would take a step forward, I’d have clients and customers approach me to do another ‘NLP course’. Only until I totally committed and stopped doing public NLP courses did the new chapter of my journey truly gain traction.
Did you ever feel like throwing the towel in and if so, what made you continue?
So many times! I never really hated the corporate world. In fact, I enjoyed large parts of it. At times that made it hard for me to not think about going back, especially when I was missing being part of a team and it felt like it was taking longer than I expected to get things moving in business.
I kept on going because I know that I truly love what I do … when I’m working with individual clients or groups & the best way for me to do that is in what I’m doing in Rapid Transformation. Plus not one single project I ever worked on in my corporate career has given me as much satisfaction as seeing a client really getting their ‘things’ together, achieving amazing results and changes.
What do you think your clients value most about what you offer?
That I truly care! I love getting to know them and rolling up my sleeves to help them. When they come across roadblocks or opportunities, I’ve got the experience and toolkits from NLP as well as Wealth Dynamics, which can help them move forward and make the right decisions.
What new and exciting plans do you have for this year?
A core part of my business will always be to work with 1-2-1 clients, as that’s what I love and that’s where I know I can add lots of value. I also love working with smaller groups & helping them learn from each other too. I recently launched the Transformation Exchange, my first official group coaching and mastermind community and it’s going really well.
A big part of this year will be growing this community and also creating a few additional experiences for my clients, such as hosting more Rapid Transformation Immersion Weekends, where they don’t come from more training or ‘knowledge’ but instead have the time, space & help to actually get things done!
Can you give us one tip for standing out from the crowd in your area of work?
Play to their strengths and talents, as this will mean that you’ll enjoy it more & experience more ‘flow’. Once things are flowing, you won’t be able to NOT stand out in an authentic way in a crowd or amongst others, because of the value you offer.
APCTC members like to aspire to those that are considered experts in their field. Can you share how well you’re doing in terms of:
Client feedback and emotional rewards
I recently did a client feedback survey and was blown away by the responses. Overall the words that my clients used when working with me were: trust, care and results. That makes it all worthwhile in my eyes!
Monetary success and business growth
It’s been nearly 9 years since I started my own business and I’m still here growing it. I feel like this is only just the start, which motivates me and excites me for future business growth.
Your work-life balance
Everyone in business has something that can continually improve and this is one that I’m actively working on. I truly love what I do and at times that makes it really hard to switch off. Over the past couple of years, I’ve been better at outsourcing and getting help to do things where it’s not playing to my strengths, or when it’s not making the best use of my time.
Do you have a final message for anyone who aspires to you?
There’ll never be the perfect time, so don’t wait for that ‘one day’ or until all the steps are clear. You have got to actually get out there & do it, because that’s where you’ll learn the most & can continually grow from that place. Plus: be YOU. That way you’ll always be unique in what you do!
There will be more on Osmaan Sharif and his tools and techniques in a few weeks time. Feeling inspired to knock your job on the head and get started on something more exciting?
